Sepúlveda: “Debuting with Movistar in San Juan will be a dream come true”

  • After five years in the French peloton, the Argentine has won a place in the World Tour
  • “The year’s major objectives will come later, but I will make it to the Vuelta a San Juan with some good kilometers in my legs”
  • “I want to learn from the leaders, especially Alejandro Valverde, who has always been my idol”
  • “I’m very impressed with the crowds in San Juan, because they are very enthusiastic. I think the fans deserve a race like this one”

Eduardo Sepúlveda was shaped at the UCI sponsored World Cycling Center in Aigle (Switzerland) and now he wants to become one of this year’s breakout riders. After five seasons in the French peloton, the Bretagne-Séché later become the Fortuneo-Oscaro, the Argentine is finally achieving one of his goals: competing for a World Tour team, Spain’s Movistar.

At the age of 26, Sepúlveda is getting the chance of a lifetime: “An opportunity like this doesn’t come around every day,” he affirms.  “Debuting with Movistar in the Vuelta a San Juan will be a dream come true,” he continues, aware of the responsibility he is taking on, but also conscious that in order to keep progressing he needed a change. “The main goals of the season will come later, but I will make it to San Juan with good kilometers in my legs,” he warns, without hiding his intentions.

Starting out as an excellent rouleur and time trial rider, this Argentinian from Patagonia turned into a climber in 2011, when he spent time in the high performance center run by the UCI in Aigle. There, he lost six kilos and proved that he can also fly when the roads get steep.

A two year contract
Since then, he has enjoyed luck and misfortune in equal parts. However, now that he has become a part of a major league team and has matured riding beside Nairo Quintana, Alejando Valverde and Mikel Landa, he is eager to take a giant step. “I’ve signed for two years and the first thing I have to do is to learn from the leaders, especially Valverde, because he has always been my idol and it’s going to be fantastic to ride on the same team as him. I would like to learn by his side. Also from the rest of my team mates.”

Sepulveda has also had his share of hardship. His father died tragically in a car accident when Eduardo was only 16 years old and they were both returning home from a race he had won. It was Eduardo’s father, an old time amateur rider, who passed on his love of cycling and who still serves as motivation for Eduardo to continue training and making progress. “Unzué, like many other people, is confident that I can make a definite leap,” he explains. “Maybe I will succeed,” he adds hopefully.

At the moment, his resume isn’t very thick, but on several occasions he has proved his fantastic skills and in 2016 he came just shy of victory in the Tour de San Luis after winning the Amago stage and finishing second in the general classification, just 20 seconds behind Dayer Quintana and ahead of Nairo; both are now his team mates at Movistar.

“My debut on the team is going to be special because I will be riding in my native country, and furthermore, in San Juan, where the crowds are wonderful,” he comments with pride. “As part of the Argentine national selection I’ve raced in San Juan many times - last year I finished eleventh, 1:47 from Mollema – and I’m always impressed by the crowds, especially in the last stage, which circles around San Juan, because the roads are usually packed with fans,” he says, demonstrating perfect knowledge of the race.

The problem is that, since the Vuelta a San Juan is international and will feature some of the best cyclists on the planet, it’s going to be more and more difficult to stand out. Much less win. “I more or less know the route from other times. It’s going to be hard, especially because of the heat,” he predicts. “And the participation is awesome,” with seven World Tour teams competing. “There’s a very high level, honestly, I think that the San Juan fans deserve a race like this one.”
